Hilborough Village

A most beautiful stretch of the River Wissey with a leafy estate village strung out along the Swaffham Road and Hilborough's pedimented hall in pale yellow brick on a rise overlooking the park.

All Saints' Church, clearly visible at the southern end, is where the original Saxon 'enclosure of a woman called Hildeburh' was first established.  Hilborough has connections to two of England's great military heroes; the Duke of Wellington lived for a while at the hall and several generations of Nelsons held the living here throughout the 18th Century, including Horatio's father Edmund before his move to Burnham Thorpe.

Nelson certainly stayed with his uncle at the rectory and later, when Admiral, he adopted the title 'Baron Nelson of the Nile and Hilborough'.
